The growth of social media and online connectivity, not only through the proliferation of e-commerce platforms and marketplaces but the advent of social selling via the range of social media tools has driven the fashion industry into a new dimension. Earlier generations of established fashion houses are now seeing increasing competition from smaller more digitally nimble brands that are bringing fashion trends from the drawing board to the consumer far faster than the four-seasons-a-year fashion weeks. Fashion bloggers have taken over the mantle of the likes of Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazar in bringing the latest in fashion trends to the end consumer. The latter have also multiplied in numbers from the select few thousand who could afford the exclusivity of fashion houses to the masses who have discovered high fashion is no longer restricted to the Guccis, YSLs and Armanis, but have gone to embrace cutting edge designers like Michael Kors, Rebecca Minkoff, Kate Spade and Tory Burch.

How does a new designer looking to create a unique space within this gamut of old and new stars establish a brand? Let’s start off with an understanding of the various digital and social media tools that can be used, and how best to leverage them.

Social Media

Facebook: with over 1.2 billion users worldwide, this is one platform that no fashion brand, no matter how small or large, can afford to miss. Using Facebook fan pages and the timeline feature, Facebook allows brands to post images, updates, video and other forms of visual communication to its followers. Facebook Video has now grown to volumes that represent a credible challenge to rival YouTube, making it a channel to watch and use. Besides these, the use of Facebook ads is increasing as it allows advertisers to target specific audiences based on a variety of demographic attributes. Facebook has also implemented a Buy button on ads as well as Page posts to enable viewers to directly buy merchandise from these ads and pages. How fashion brands like Rebecca Minkoff's are using social media for effective fashion marketing

  • Facebook Fanpage of women’s fashion brand – Rebecca Minkoff

Instagram: the image sharing app with over 400 million active users has enabled both targeting and shopping functions on the app, allowing brands to reach customers directly with their products. This is a huge advantage to boutique fashion designers who may appeal to a niche but have limited resources to reach out to their target audiences. Instagram allows you to take advantage of trending hashtags to promote relevant content as well.Instagram shop now or buy buttons allows customers to directly buy merchandise from the instagram profile

  • Instagram allows fashion brands to to post images, upload videos and sell merchandise with the SHOP NOW or BUY NOW buttons

Twitter: The next most popular social media channel, Twitter provides brands an unlimited opportunity to reach out to audiences and promote their products. Twitter has also gained significant currency as a social media channel to resolve customer issues, and many brands have used Twitter advertising to promote products. Hashtags remain Twitter’s biggest draw as attracting particular segments, spreading information on promotions and offers is made so much easier through their use. Twitter too has a Buy Now button to allow followers of the brand to directly purchase in real time. Using followers, keywords and tailored audience features, fashion brands can reach the exact demographics they’re looking to target.Twitter allows customers to directly buy merchandise through its buy button on the twitter profile

  • With buy buttons customers can now buy merchandise from the brand’s twitter page.

Pinterest: With nearly 200 million users Pinterest gives rival Instagram a good fight, providing options for image sharing, brand building and customer connect. The Pinterest boards allow a user (such as a fashion brand) to set up different sections where images relevant to the topic of that board can be shared. These boards can also be made private or restricted to a definite number of individuals, such as past customers, allowing designers to showcase their collections in advance to get feedback and reviews from genuine buyers. Pinterest’s Buy button, called Buyable Pins has a similar features to the other buy buttons allowing users to buy products without leaving the app environment. One of the best way to buy merchandise with the help of Pinterest's buy button buy merchandise through its buy button on the twitter profile

  • Pinterest buy button is an effective tool for directing customers to buy merchandise with one click from the image itself.

While these are not the only social media apps that can be used by fashion brands to promote, share, sell and interact, they are among the most wide-reaching and cost-effective solutions, making it possible for small fashion brands to create, build and maintain followers and loyal audiences who will support and promote an upcoming fashion brand.

What are you doing to take advantage of the features on these platforms? I’d love to hear your stories. Do add your comments below or write to me here.

I had done a post on the Little Black Dress a while back, and I thought this would be just the right time to take a look at it again. February is here, and with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, all the ladies are just waiting to get jazzed up for that special night with their loved ones. This is one evening that you want to look PERFECT, and since it’s a Saturday night this time round, get ready for some serious competition from all the other pretty women around. All the popular hotspots are going to be brimming with beautiful ladies, and if you want to stand out, it’s going to take some preparation!

To help you choose what to wear, Daily Look has put together their best choices for the Little Black Dress The LBD forms the base of your look for the evening, and I’ve put together a couple of outfits – accessories and all – that I think will make your beau have eyes only for you the entire evening! Depending on your taste, pick which one of the two best suits you, and have a wonderful time with your special someone.Fuel4Fashion blog Little Black Dress ensemble for Valentine's day THE LOOK: The classy stylish you wants to be sure of creating an impression, and this outfit is designed to do just that. This pleated LBD with lace all over, extending to the sleeves and a high neckline highlights your face and arms to their best. The gold Arab style necklace, ring and bracelet, complemented with gold rod earrings and a vintage gold hair comb proclaim you the Queen of your beloved’s heart. Paired with a brown leather purse and high heeled animal print slippers, this look is definitely a winner!

THE WISHLIST: Those of you aiming for a younger, flirtier and more daring look can opt for this second outfit, especially if you want to attract some jealous attention! A bare shoulders sleeveless spaghetti straps LBD with a pleated fringe creates a layered classy look that will have your loved one looking at you in a new light. Pair this with black stone-studded platinum/white gold based jewelry, like this choker necklace, bracelet and danglers. A studded watch and black and white chain purse, paired with sparkling stiletto sandals completes the ensemble and will definitely classify you as a head-turner.

I loved both these looks, and if the evening program calls for a romantic, intimate candlelight dinner, I would go for the former. But if it’s a night out on the town, the second look is definitely what I would opt for. So have fun, and enjoy your special evening!

In the 19th and early 20th century, tennis players ordinarily wore long sleeved white buttoned up shirt with flannel trousers and ties. This attire presented problems for the ease of movement during the play and created discomfort to the players. As tennis boomed, so did the demand for appropriate clothing increased. Then came into existence what were known as the polo shirts and thereafter they were being used in all forms of sports soon after their invention.

From being solely used in sportswear, later on the polo look also became an integral part of the classic casual attire for men and women both. They not only provided comfort but were also considered to be stylish amongst the working professionals.

Polo shirts have now become an essential part of the wardrobe of almost every woman as they are comfortable equally trendy. The polo look can be seen to be combined with various forms of clothing that interprets the style of every individual in a unique way.

Many celebrities like Taylor Swift and Kate Middleton also used this upcoming trend in their attire and looked fabulous in this simple form of clothing. Kate Middleton on one hand, came up with a professional look in a polo neck while, Lauren Conrad William combined it with a skirt and presented a casual approach.

Many designers were seen using the classic polo with various themes and styles in the Spring ready to wear RTW-2015 collection. As Ralph Lauren presented the open collar with a net skirt, making the outfit look elegant, Valentino chose a more textured fabric with a vibrant print for his theme.

Some designers presented their polo look in various fabrics, sporting a relaxed casual look while others created semi formal silhouettes with the same polo neck.

This trend though simple, has been influencing and inspiring established as well as budding designers to come up with new and exciting ways to play around with this look. This look has become a classic and classics never change, they just evolve with time. This trend will keep on evolving and will become a part of every woman’s comfort zone.

Born in Santo Domingo in the year of 1932, the fashion world gained a precious gem for its collection, named Oscar de le Renta. He was trained by Cristobal Balenciaga and Antonio del Castillo and worked for Lanvin and Balmain before finally opening his own brand.

Oscar de la Renta became internationally known as one of the couturier who dressed Jacqueline Kennedy and even today, his fashion house continues to dress from film stars to royalty.

Oscar de la Renta’s 2015 spring/summer ready-to-wear 2015 collection was a complete representation of what Oscar de la Renta stands for. It comprised of feminism, elegance, beauty, seduction, sophistication, ambition, everything that a woman wanted herself to be. Oscar de la Renta captured this essence in each of his garments. As the Oscar de la Renta era ends, we decided to pick out some of his signature designs and pay a tribute to the most adored designer of all times.

Cameron Diaz flaunted this gold-dusted gown in the Oscars of 2010. The exquisite detailing and the flow of the fabric draped around her felt like it was a part of her. Oscar de la Renta knew exactly how to flourish the features of Diaz on this occasion.

Amy Adams wore this stunning Oscar de la Renta number for the Oscars 2013 and took away a lot of breaths. Amy Adams wore this number with elegance and grace that made her seem like a floating angel.

Emma Watson Emma Watson : http://goo.gl/dXJVGC(Photo Credits: http://goo.gl/dXJVGC )

For the premiere of her upcoming movie Noah, Emma Watson carried of Oscar de la Renta’s autumn/winter 2014 collection for jaw-dropping effects. The elegant front and the daring low back combination worked well to represent the ambitious feminine women of today’s era.

For the Vogue shoot 2014 featuring Beyonce, Oscar de la Renta formed this speechless design that would make any women pause and admire the perfection this dress. The waviness of the fabric and layering combined with its colour created an unnatural spell for every woman.

The last on our list is the wedding gown of Amal Alamuddin which took place in September 2014 and was exclusively featured in Vogue. The off-shoulder laced gown represented the traditional pattern while also being one of the absolutely stunning designs of the year.

Oscar de la Renta is the name every woman depended on to make them feel beautiful. He fulfilled the dreams and made wishes come true for women all over the world.

Dresses with pockets : Trend alert for 2015

The fashion weeks brought us many trends and styles that will be seen in the 2015. As the shows end, they leave us with their interpretations of trends.

One such trend that was seen in abundance was the extensive use of the pockets. Emerging from trousers, this year saw pockets being placed in every form of garment, from dresses to skirts to any casual garment for women.

In historic times, pockets were tied around the waist, with a string, like a pouch to hold small items like snuff boxes and perfume vials in it. Pockets have now evolved from being an attachment outside the garment, to being sewn inside the garment for convenience. Patch pocket and concealed pockets are the two most common form of pockets seen on the women’s garments. Clothes are normally differentiated according to the pockets it holds. One such example is of multi pocket Cargo pants, which is distinguished by its bagginess and the 6-7 pockets it holds depending on the styling of the garment.

Pockets become handy to the working women of today to keep their personal belongings. Now it’s not only required in their formal wear but also for their casuals. Pockets are being presented in skirts, evening gowns, casual dresses etc. to keep their hands free. Pockets are the trend that defines the working women of today, who likes to be feminine but still wants to maintain their professional image at all hours of the day.

Though pockets are of functional use and essential for today’s women, at certain times it is not completely required. This trend should see increasing traction in coming years, inspiring designers with its simplicity and presenting feminism to the working women who are always on the go.

Don’t forget to get inspired from our other blogs on Trend alert 2015 – Plaids , High Slit Skirts and Classic polo look .

Creating the Perfect DIY Fashion Ensemble

Love wearing stuff you’ve created yourself? There are hundreds of posts out there dedicated to making your own fashion design – from old tees, shirts, skirts and more. DIY (Do-It-Yourself) fashion can be an interesting and inexpensive way to apply your creative skills and create some new and interesting clothes and accessories.

So why not create an ensemble entirely made up of your DIY creative skills? We’ve already showcased DIY fashion post in the past, and thought we’d put one up for you again, from the hundreds of examples we’ve come across. You’ll need a few hours, some glue, paints or markers, and a small amount of bling to create:

  1. A Top (any t-shirt)
  2. A pair of jeans (always a favorite!)
  3. A pair of shoes (any serviceable pair)
  4. A purse/clutch
  5. A belt
  6. A headband

DIY fashion 2

So here goes!

  1. The Top

Blouse 2

I loved this Lattice T-shirt design by Wobisobi. It’s simple to make, requires just a few cuts and studs to turn an ordinary boring tee into a glamorous top – no sewing needed. And it can be done in just twenty minutes!

  1. Jeans

bottom front

Tired of your old pair of jeans? Dip the lower portion – a few inches will do – in watered down bleach for a couple of hours (more if they’re dark), wash and let them dry completely. Then use fabric paint or permanent markers to create your choice of designs, like mintedstrawberry did. The bleach and washing might take half a day, but the designs are up to you, so an hour should do it! Bleach and color markers are the only tools needed!

  1. Shoes

Ispydiy_smokingslippers_slider

Spice up your old shoes with a little lace or studs like ispydiy – all you need is a glue gun and sufficient braid. Be sure to let the glue dry completely before you wear them though. Time required – 20 minutes.

  1. Purse/Clutch

clutch 1

No ensemble is complete without a clutch, and we love this cute neon number by SurpriseDIY. This one requires a bit of effort as you’ll have to stitch the pieces together, but it requires straight stitches and should be easy to do. A little arty press stud or vintage button completes the bag. If you’re inclined, you can add a thin leather strap through button holes in the side as well and sling it over your shoulder. A couple of hours of effort – but the result is worth it!

  1. Belt

rope-belt

Grab a decent length of canvas/cotton rope, slide a few beads from each side, knot up the ends and voila – a funky belt to go with your top and jeans! You’ll need no more than a few minutes for this, and the beads need to be the right size, like the ones transientexpression has used. If you’re inclined, dye the rope in fabric dye, but be sure to dry it well and wash thoroughly before use – you don’t want rope-marks on that funky top!

  1. Headband

headband f

Create this funky leather headband from pieces of scrap leather and a vintage button, like missikrissie’s done. All you need is a plain old headband, some glue and leather scraps. You can create your own shapes and designs to turn heads your way with this funky headpiece.

Loved this piece? Do write in to us with your ideas and creations!

Weddings, in every part of the world are a challenging affair. From making the guest list to deciding the car, the preparations are endless. Bride-to-be will always be expounding over details, most important of all over the issues of her wedding dress. None can demur on her actions, after all a bride does get a little panicky on her wedding. The most important thing although, for a bride, on her wedding day is her wedding dress. Western wedding dresses have seen a lot of changes where trends jumped across eras and made appearances on the aisle.

Earlier the wedding dresses were huge on embroidery and laces like Queen Victoria’s sleeve dropping dress which was very heavy. Also sleeves were a noticeable aspect of any wedding dress of those times.

This dress is considered as one of the most iconic wedding dress of all times and was made by Ann Lowe for Jacqueline when she was getting married to the then senator, John F Kennedy.

Veil was considered as a very important part of the earlier wedding dress; Jacqueline Kennedy’s dress had a very big and embroidered veil. This dress is acclaimed to be one of the sexiest and prettiest of all time.

Next is our favorite Princess Diana. Her wedding dress and veil makes swoon. Her wedding was like a fairy tale and she herself looked no less than a princess.

With the change of time, women started wearing gowns that stick to their figure and gave them shape and big sleeves and curves were discarded. But the long veil still sticks around.

Dubai has been gaining popularity over the years as the fashion central of the world.  All eyes have turned to see what wonders this Arab country holds under its wings. This means all the shopping addicted people are now directed here. The signature style for Arab fashion was the wise use of scarf, but later trends diversified.

Dubai became a very famous destination in the passing years and it even hosted Dubai Fashion Week for first time in 2005. It was organized by FZ LLC and was co-founded by Marc Robinson, the famous international designer. Other highlights of the Fashion Week are, showcasing designs in the Eco Talent area, showing short films and viewing the ramp in touch screen monitors.

Also it’s not just the Dubai’s fashion week that attracts visitors to this country, the record of visitors in the Dubai Mall firmly stood at 6.25 million making it the most visited mall in the world. From 54 million in 2011, the number rose to 65 million in 2012 and the owner, Emaar Properties recorded a flat growth of 15 per cent. The increasing number of visitors in 2013 is a clear statement of the increasing popularity of its global reputation. The digits surpassed the shoppers at the other leading malls of America (Mall of America) and UK (Bullring Birmingham).

To harness more profit from this increasing popularity, another ambitious project is being set up which will prove to be a design district where designer’s can put-up their designs. The aim is to boost fashion activities in Dubai and also to attract foreign designers.

Also Vogue magazine has plans to launch an event in this October where all the fashionista of the world as well as the fashion writers and readers will attend. It will display designs from as much as 8 designers, mostly handpicked by Vogue. Designers like Simone Rocha from Ireland, Andrea Incontri from Italy and Razan Alazzouni from Saudi Arabia.  It seems like the time is near when Dubai will become a big player in the fashion business and will soon enthrall the world with its new talents.

Jackie Kennedy took the fashion of the 1950’s to a new dimension and her fashion sense translates to the present chic flat shoes, a lady handbag and of course, Hermes scarf. She shepherded the women of the 50’s from their tight waist crinolines and overly done hair and make-up.  Her feminine style has made her an inspiration even almost two decades after her death. Here are a few lessons that we can learn from her sophisticated sartorial taste.

  1. If you are in a mood to wear white, make sure it’s as milk white as possible to create an appearance. Also white sunglasses will not at all be monotonous with such a white dress. Plus if you are married, and then make sure your husband also compliments your white outfit, for a fabulous photograph.

2. Secondly, button down sleeveless tee- shirt looks better than tank tops when worn with shorts.

3. Pink is more feminine and eye catching than red. Also remember, diamonds are a women’s best friend.

4. Floral prints always do the magic, be it any generation.

5. To create an appearance, the fabric has to be glossy and the colors have to be picked up wisely. Plus make sure the dress fits you at the right places. To keep it classy, wear simple hats, not floral hats.

And lastly, whatever you wear, make it look effortless. Use mild make-up and most importantly have a simple smile on your face. That’s all you need to do a “Jackie O”.

Every morning people worry about what they are going to wear for the day. Formals are a set pattern and the popular belief is that not much diversion is available in them except for the colors.  People go to work each day and try to look different from their work associates, but not many are aware of the options available around. Keeping up with the style credentials is not easy with  formal wear. However SS’14 collection displayed a variety of work wear from different designers which can do subtle arrangements in your staple tailored trousers and colored shirts to create a bigger difference.

If you find your gray and black coat and trousers boring or if you want to add color to your work wear then you can pick this classy top-to-toe tailored cobalt blue blazer with these matching trousers by Malene Birger.  Also if you are in the hunt of alternate wears to the regular 9 to 5 formals then Tara Lamont-Djite has the ideal collection for you.

Sexy and sober, this year’s fashion week’s collection had immense amount of innovation in the work wear department.

Not only women but the look of men has also changed. They have started to ditch black and try new colors.  To get this look match EMPORIO ARMANI hounds tooth sweater with ASOS skinny fit suit jacket in mid grey.

Also men can add colors in their work wear too.  Like this combo made from a tweed suit waist coat, Navy textured skinny tie with bar, white tailored fit shirt and selected hedge green three Paris Chinos. By adding colors one can make a boring formals look fresh and bright. What do you think about the renovated work wear for men and women?
