The growth of social media and online connectivity, not only through the proliferation of e-commerce platforms and marketplaces but the advent of social selling via the range of social media tools has driven the fashion industry into a new dimension. Earlier generations of established fashion houses are now seeing increasing competition from smaller more digitally nimble brands that are bringing fashion trends from the drawing board to the consumer far faster than the four-seasons-a-year fashion weeks. Fashion bloggers have taken over the mantle of the likes of Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazar in bringing the latest in fashion trends to the end consumer. The latter have also multiplied in numbers from the select few thousand who could afford the exclusivity of fashion houses to the masses who have discovered high fashion is no longer restricted to the Guccis, YSLs and Armanis, but have gone to embrace cutting edge designers like Michael Kors, Rebecca Minkoff, Kate Spade and Tory Burch.

How does a new designer looking to create a unique space within this gamut of old and new stars establish a brand? Let’s start off with an understanding of the various digital and social media tools that can be used, and how best to leverage them.

Social Media

Facebook: with over 1.2 billion users worldwide, this is one platform that no fashion brand, no matter how small or large, can afford to miss. Using Facebook fan pages and the timeline feature, Facebook allows brands to post images, updates, video and other forms of visual communication to its followers. Facebook Video has now grown to volumes that represent a credible challenge to rival YouTube, making it a channel to watch and use. Besides these, the use of Facebook ads is increasing as it allows advertisers to target specific audiences based on a variety of demographic attributes. Facebook has also implemented a Buy button on ads as well as Page posts to enable viewers to directly buy merchandise from these ads and pages. How fashion brands like Rebecca Minkoff's are using social media for effective fashion marketing

  • Facebook Fanpage of women’s fashion brand – Rebecca Minkoff

Instagram: the image sharing app with over 400 million active users has enabled both targeting and shopping functions on the app, allowing brands to reach customers directly with their products. This is a huge advantage to boutique fashion designers who may appeal to a niche but have limited resources to reach out to their target audiences. Instagram allows you to take advantage of trending hashtags to promote relevant content as well.Instagram shop now or buy buttons allows customers to directly buy merchandise from the instagram profile

  • Instagram allows fashion brands to to post images, upload videos and sell merchandise with the SHOP NOW or BUY NOW buttons

Twitter: The next most popular social media channel, Twitter provides brands an unlimited opportunity to reach out to audiences and promote their products. Twitter has also gained significant currency as a social media channel to resolve customer issues, and many brands have used Twitter advertising to promote products. Hashtags remain Twitter’s biggest draw as attracting particular segments, spreading information on promotions and offers is made so much easier through their use. Twitter too has a Buy Now button to allow followers of the brand to directly purchase in real time. Using followers, keywords and tailored audience features, fashion brands can reach the exact demographics they’re looking to target.Twitter allows customers to directly buy merchandise through its buy button on the twitter profile

  • With buy buttons customers can now buy merchandise from the brand’s twitter page.

Pinterest: With nearly 200 million users Pinterest gives rival Instagram a good fight, providing options for image sharing, brand building and customer connect. The Pinterest boards allow a user (such as a fashion brand) to set up different sections where images relevant to the topic of that board can be shared. These boards can also be made private or restricted to a definite number of individuals, such as past customers, allowing designers to showcase their collections in advance to get feedback and reviews from genuine buyers. Pinterest’s Buy button, called Buyable Pins has a similar features to the other buy buttons allowing users to buy products without leaving the app environment. One of the best way to buy merchandise with the help of Pinterest's buy button buy merchandise through its buy button on the twitter profile

  • Pinterest buy button is an effective tool for directing customers to buy merchandise with one click from the image itself.

While these are not the only social media apps that can be used by fashion brands to promote, share, sell and interact, they are among the most wide-reaching and cost-effective solutions, making it possible for small fashion brands to create, build and maintain followers and loyal audiences who will support and promote an upcoming fashion brand.

What are you doing to take advantage of the features on these platforms? I’d love to hear your stories. Do add your comments below or write to me here.

Love wearing stuff you’ve created yourself? There are hundreds of posts out there dedicated to making your own fashion design – from old tees, shirts, skirts and more. DIY (Do-It-Yourself) fashion can be an interesting and inexpensive way to apply your creative skills and create some new and interesting clothes and accessories.

So why not create an ensemble entirely made up of your DIY creative skills? We’ve already showcased DIY fashion post in the past, and thought we’d put one up for you again, from the hundreds of examples we’ve come across. You’ll need a few hours, some glue, paints or markers, and a small amount of bling to create:

  1. A Top (any t-shirt)
  2. A pair of jeans (always a favorite!)
  3. A pair of shoes (any serviceable pair)
  4. A purse/clutch
  5. A belt
  6. A headband

So here goes!

  1. The Top

Blouse 2

I loved this Lattice T-shirt design by Wobisobi. It’s simple to make, requires just a few cuts and studs to turn an ordinary boring tee into a glamorous top – no sewing needed. And it can be done in just twenty minutes!

  1. Jeans

bottom front

Tired of your old pair of jeans? Dip the lower portion – a few inches will do – in watered down bleach for a couple of hours (more if they’re dark), wash and let them dry completely. Then use fabric paint or permanent markers to create your choice of designs, like mintedstrawberry did. The bleach and washing might take half a day, but the designs are up to you, so an hour should do it! Bleach and color markers are the only tools needed!

  1. Shoes

Ispydiy_smokingslippers_slider

Spice up your old shoes with a little lace or studs like ispydiy – all you need is a glue gun and sufficient braid. Be sure to let the glue dry completely before you wear them though. Time required – 20 minutes.

  1. Purse/Clutch

clutch 1

No ensemble is complete without a clutch, and we love this cute neon number by SurpriseDIY. This one requires a bit of effort as you’ll have to stitch the pieces together, but it requires straight stitches and should be easy to do. A little arty press stud or vintage button completes the bag. If you’re inclined, you can add a thin leather strap through button holes in the side as well and sling it over your shoulder. A couple of hours of effort – but the result is worth it!

  1. Belt

rope-belt

Grab a decent length of canvas/cotton rope, slide a few beads from each side, knot up the ends and voila – a funky belt to go with your top and jeans! You’ll need no more than a few minutes for this, and the beads need to be the right size, like the ones transientexpression has used. If you’re inclined, dye the rope in fabric dye, but be sure to dry it well and wash thoroughly before use – you don’t want rope-marks on that funky top!

  1. Headband

headband f

Create this funky leather headband from pieces of scrap leather and a vintage button, like missikrissie’s done. All you need is a plain old headband, some glue and leather scraps. You can create your own shapes and designs to turn heads your way with this funky headpiece.

Loved this piece? Do write in to us with your ideas and creations!

Corporate uniforms are meant to create a lasting impression outside as well as inside. To brand your business with a corporate label it’s important to create an image which works for both the employees and the public. A corporate uniform instills a sense of loyalty among employees and also boosts the public perception of the quality and reliability of the brand. With that kind of influential power corporate uniforms covey the message you want and that too quietly. There has been a paradigm shift in the corporate wears of the earlier times as compared to now.  Now even the corporate wear focuses on style, since people wear them to office daily.

The uniforms not only make the employee feel good but also make him feel proud of the organization that he is working with. This year’s New York Fashion Week brought with it waves of inspiration for corporate to develop their brand apparel. There are a number of new trends that have found their place in the brand apparel program for the corporate organizations.

First is the Custom Caps: Caps were always a unique feature and it’s not a surprise that caps are now getting hotter day and day. Nowadays there are more than one ways to customize these caps for service industries.

After caps, the next big thing is the performance clothing.  Performance wear is a functional, multi-purpose wear which has useful properties like anti-bacterial or UV protector. Some sports adventure companies are now trying to make performance clothing, a part of their uniform.

Then the next hit item on the list is Jackets which are popular mainly due to their versatility.  From winters to summers these jackets are the coolest gig on the planet.

Nowadays the corporate dresses are also influenced by the recent fashion trends. Check out these new corporate uniforms for women.

Guest Blogger-Kristen Kauffman: Smart Ways to Wear Your Favorite Jacket

07 Wednesday May 2014

I am delighted that we now have the opportunity to feature guest blogger Kristen Kauffman on the Fuel4Fashion blog. We are now starting a guest blog section, in order to bring more niche topics and unique content from the fashion industry to our readers. This segment will feature articles on topics similar to the ones we have been bringing you, but from a variety of authors from the field of fashion.

This is the first article of the guest blogging series & today Kristen will talk about Smart Ways to Wear Your Favorite Jacket.

We all have one: that one jacket that you absolutely love. You look great in it, it’s comfortable, it’s timelessly fashionable, and, well, it keeps you warm. But because it’s one of your favorite pieces, you can’t stand to keep it in the closet for any long period of time, right? Depending on where you live and where you travel, you may be able to pull that jacket out more often, using a couple of smart tweaks. If you want to maximize the jacket love, take a look at a few different ways to wear that favorite jacket of yours.

Spring

Spring can be a weird time of the year. Sometimes it’s cold, sometimes it’s hot. Sometimes it’s windy and cloudy, and sometimes it’s sunny and warm. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear your favorite jacket in spring. Whether you jacket is black, brown, charcoal, or any other color, you can still liven it up for spring. Combine it with your favorite jumpsuit like this one from Guess. Or wear your favorite pair of Lucky Jeans with a t-shirt under the jacket. In Spring, it’s important to keep the colors light, and the look casual.

Summer

I know: it sounds crazy to wear a leather jacket in the summer. Guess what? It’s not so crazy. Just don’t wear it out in the middle of the day. If you live in a coastal area, it may get cool at night. If you live in a desert, you may experience storms. If you are traveling, you’re likely to go someplace with a cooler temperature. Since it is summer and you don’t want to overheat, match a leather jacket with a pair of shorts and a chic chiffon blouse like these from Modcloth. Match the ensemble with peep toe booties and a great pair of Ray Ban Wayfarer’s or Carrera aviators. Another great way to rock the summer fashion is to combine your favorite jacket with a pretty, blousy dress.

 Fall

Fall could be one of the most fun times of the wear to wear your favorite jacket. If the weather is mild enough, you can still rock out the fashions that you’ve been rocking all year. But if the weather is starting to get blustery though not dreadfully cold, try adding scarves and hats. If the tone of your jacket coordinates, try this fuschia fedora from e4hats.com, or try a wider brimmed hat from Urban Outfitters. Try different scarves for different looks, and remember that the trend in scarves this year is scarves with trim.

Winter

In winter, no matter which part of the country you live in, a jacket becomes an essential part of the wardrobe. Pair it with suitable scarves and hats to create a sophisticated yet cozy look. After all, doctors say that you lose 80% of your body heat from the head and the neck so you’ll need to be covered up to stay warm. But if the weather has gotten so cold that you actually doubt the ability to continue wearing your favorite jacket, consider the effect of layering. Wear skirts over pants. Wear a hoodie underneath the jacket. Wear an oversized scarf like this one on Etsy.

A few smart tweaks and your favorite jacket could be in use for a good part of the year, not just the colder months.

All that you want to know about Denims

When we think of denim in its cradle, our minds get fogged with the raunchy look of the 70’s where the denim was the hot new thing. Though even today, we cannot say that denim has got old but definitely it’s the elder if not wiser brother to the latest environment friendly, water saving and waste reducing denim.

Actually denim earlier and even today is a fabric created from cotton when its woven into raw fabric which is then dyed using synthetic indigo to give it’s the color by which we recognize jeans today.

Image Courtesy: http://goo.gl/ktPh5Z Title: Selvedge Denim

Title: Selvedge Denim

Denim by the name of Selvedge denim is a premium fabric created on antique looms.  They are manufactured in antique looms which means that a lot more money and time is being spent on them and is slower in process since it lacks most of the modern automation.

Image Courtesy: http://goo.gl/C8ueaZ Title: Denim and its various moods

Title: Denim and its various moods

Then there is the raw denim which is washed in production and it never undergoes the sizing process. Soon when its cut and washed with the desirable base shade and then the resin is removed so it becomes more pliable.

Image Courtesy: http://goo.gl/I2A04d Title: Denim’s basics

Title: Denim’s basics

Wearing raw denim is really a tough task but it’s really worth the effort.  Firstly it’s just the raw denim so you get to wear the real, authentic denim without the dye so it’s going to last you longer and secondly the fabric is not bad for the skin since it has not being dyed with harmful chemicals.

However, if it’s so then what’s the difference between jeans that costs 30 bucks and jeans that costs 250 bucks? The primary difference is the quality and then is its origin. Like in Asia jeans costs as low as 30$ and in Mexico $75 dollar. But when it comes to Japan and America jeans costs as much as 375$ or more. So it’s primarily the fabric quality and production detail is what decides the price tag on your jeans.

Upcycle Fashion

Fashion has a new meaning in the fashion industry and that is called upcycle fashion. As they say, investing time, skill and creativity can never go waste, that’s why an unwanted or damaged dress can be transformed into your best item in the wardrobe.  It’s fun and also harmless for the environment as this method reduces the amount of waste and also to save money. So here are some easy ways to do upcycle fashion.

1. Upcycle Denim Sandal:

Summers are the time of fashion and the way to spend this summer’s intelligently is to Upcycle. For this you might need scissors, thread and needle and tons of inspiration.  For e.g. everyone has those extra long, baggy worn-out jeans that are taking the cupboard’s space but you will never wear them. Create these sandals which are opened toed and high ankle. Designed by Danielle, a designer based in Haifa, Israel, these jeans retain the signature features like zipper, buttons, pocket and the leather label.

2. Rubber Dress:

Weddings are the time for extravagant and profligate spending and who can blame the bride for buying a wedding gown worth a fortune? But when you have the option to look good in an eco way then who would deny it? This dress is created by a British artist Susie Mac Murray and is made from 1,400 inverted rubber gloves, a common household variety for doing the dishes. It will be featured in New York’s Museum of Art and Designs in a new exhibition which is ironically named ‘Second Lives’.

3. Gown made out of  Recycled Soda Tabs:

Sweet snacks are now converted into new and chic prom dress.  Sixteen year old Maura Pozek   spent 100 hours threading countless yards of pink ribbon to create this. This gown, called Cantastic also shimmers in the sunlight giving quite an entry to the wearer.

Do it yourself fashion

Mismatching tops with skirts are old school, nowadays people are getting more and more creative with their needs. To make sure that a red purse looks ravishing with a sooth black dress one can use a little imagination and add colorful stones at the hem of the black dress. It’s due to these ideas that Do-It-Yourself trends are gaining popularity and also due to economic factors like re-usability and novelty but the prime factor is that it encourages wardrobe revamping.

Image

For young people D-I-Y projects come to the rescue. They would clutch their glue and scissors, then look for inspiration on the internet.  The age group that is driven towards these projects are the young college students who find it hard to keep up with the changing patterns. In these projects people can update old clothing through simple tools and can change their total avatar with these alterations. For most of the people, love for D-I-Y starts when they see how creative the old clothes look, once they are transformed. To change the look of the old worn out jeans at the knee, grab a pair a scissors and rip off the other knee in the similar manner, thus starting a trend. Within one hour the new jeans has gone through the hell and back and later that can become the wearer’s signature outfit.

Upscaling a table cloth

The term coined for this is upcycling and it’s not only about saving money, it’s also about getting the satisfaction that one can have from wearing their own designs. This feel good is worth a lot more than the money saved. It’s about those skill set that one acquires while designing.

Image

Drape from a boring shirt

These methods have gained a lot of popularity in the recent times thanks to buddy internet and YouTube. They originated in the 70’s, in the era of punk rebellion when opposite to the mainstream culture, the pop bands would wear shredded jeans and holed tee-shirts. The intent was to be classified as new and different, more like rebel, and with it stirred the love for DIY amidst young crowd.

Do you think that D-I-Y clothes are creating more fashion awareness amongst people or are it just like other trends that pass without leaving any mark?

E-commerce and fashion industry.

The modern era brought together two of the big industries together, fashion and e-commerce.  The merger industry thus formed have broken all prejudices of being two opposite side of the coin and become partners in the looming fashion industry. E-commerce was once known to just be an advertising material for the retails store but now it’s increasing into more of an independent fashion hub. In such a shorter period of time, e-commerce has become an important part in retailing and people were seen buying more from the internet then from the shops.

Image

Since the internet gives people so much empowerment over the long check-out counter queues that people feel much eased in buying from the website. Examples of Fashion and e-commerce industry clubbing can be seen in e-tailers, which has been also been a boon to the retail world since the site only has to pay for the website domain and not for the entire shopping complex and the staff required. This way they tend to have huge marginalized profits.

Image

This online network of Fashion and e-commerce industry is now entering into big mergers and acquisitions every day to outsource its goods. Recently, from Business of Fashion’s team Imran Amed partnered with Bill Amberg of London accessories. Also customer favorite eBay collaborated with famous fashion designer Derek Lam to get to the next level of Fashion and e-commerce industry retail.

So what do you think about the changed state of Fashion and e-commerce industry? Do you think that their merge is actually a boon to the world or was it better earlier when shopping used to be a family excursion?

The traditional conservative Arabic and Islamic clothing has seen a huge revolution with designers tapping this market and infusing their creativity in the designs and fabrication. While the apparel still upholds its objective of concealing the women’s entire body, the silhouettes and value additions imparts opulence to its make.

Abaya, loose over garment that was predominantly fabricated from plain black crepe, Georgette, and chiffon has found new expressions by propound experimentation with Swarovski , lace , pearls, handwork, explicit embroideries, detailing on hem, golden and silver neckline and cuff line. The abaya covers the whole body except the face, feet, and hands. It can be worn with the niqāb, a face veil covering all but the eyes.

Jilbab, long and loose-fit coat that drapes the entire body worn by Muslim women is now embellished with rich embroideries, floral sew on motifs, this is worn with Hijab that covers hand and head.
